What is the Liberation Series?
First Fridays, or Liberation Series, is a monthly, artist-led, community-building gathering hosted in our Bed-Stuy storefront. Each season is guided by an artist working at the intersection of culture, imagination, and collective power.
This Fall, we’re teaming up with LP Alum Fei Li at Accented Projects and native New York co-facilitators to host Joy is a Rhythm, a free series that centers Bed-Stuy’s rich histories of Black music, dance, and community organizing through participatory experiences of rap, R&B, game, somatic movement, and hip-hop dance. From September to December, we’re exploring joy as a shared method for creating beauty, intimacy, and belonging across generations and diasporas.
You’re invited to try out many art forms, from workshopping elite bars and hip-hop footwork to playing dominoes and mahjong with live R&B singers serenading us. We’re centering Bed-Stuy’s mix of diasporic cultures and creative practices to embody joy, belonging, and collective liberation.

Mz. Icar is an anonymous, gender non-conforming Black-woman-led interdisciplinary art collective exploring radical Black futurity, play, memory, and autonomy.
