This year, Get Free is a refusal of erasure. It is a call to our community to do what BIPOC artists and organizers have always done: use their voice, their relationships, and their networks to resource the work that hyper-capitalist and white supremacist powers ignore, defund, or displace. This campaign is for us, by us — in the tradition of every freedom song, every open mic, every spoken word performance that turned a room into a movement.
We will name and honor the cultural contributors whose work made The LP’s work possible. We will uplift LP artists, especially poets, who are part of Brooklyn’s legacy of presenting artworks, poetry, and spoken word in DIY (ordinary) spaces as tools for resistance and liberation.
Our Create Change program embodies these truths beautifully. Each year, artists in the program are trained as cultural organizers, learning to listen deeply, partner with communities, and co-create projects that catalyze imagination into action. These artists remind us that we are all architects of possibility. They show us how to transform laundromats into gathering places, sidewalks into storytelling circles, and ordinary storefronts into extraordinary sites of connection and power.

A People Mover is a volunteer who commits to asking their networks to support The LP with a gift during the 10-day campaign. No ask or gift is too small. We’ll provide the language you need to spread the word on social media, in an email, or even in person. We try to keep it fun with raffle prizes and surprises just for PMs throughout the campaign! WHAT WE DO
The LP works with artists and neighbors to creatively consider and address critical issues impacting our communities and advocate for systemic changes. We connect, equip, and support artists, cultural producers, local residents, and anyone committed to generating dynamic collaborations in the interest of social good.
