The Laundromat Project celebrates 20 years of bringing art to city neighborhoods

Brooklyn-based cultural hub The Laundromat Project is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Since its founding in 2005, the LP has invested in more than 200 artists of color, whose work is deeply rooted in the community.

The Laundromat Project derives its name from its origins as a way to bring art and community engagement directly to laundromats, which were seen as de facto public spaces where people naturally gathered. The name reflects the idea of meeting people where they are and using art as a tool for community building.

The project’s executive director, Ayesha Williams, joined NY1 anchor Rocco Vertuccio Saturday morning on “Weekends on 1.”
