Planning with Sovereignty and Mutual Aid: A Social Cartography of Corona, Queens

As a Create Change Artist-in-Residence, Pedro Juan Cruz Cruz used Roosevelt Avenue in Queens as a branching spine into the neighborhoods of Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, and Corona, where his project took place in neighborhood plazas and underutilized lots. A temporary installation displayed a series of oral histories that transformed and activated Roosevelt Avenue into a collective urban archive. By listening, responding and engaging with the interviews and theme of sovereignty, participants were be able to tie individual narratives to the histories of activism and social justice within the outdoor spaces of their neighborhoods. The spatial intervention set the stage for participatory building sessions that engaged people to share and record what they want for the future of their neighborhoods.
