Project: Arts & Crafts Celebration
For this project, I plan to host a special one-day Arts & Crafts Celebration at my daycare, designed to engage children from low-income families in a joyful, hands-on creative experience. This event will bring together art, learning, and community in a fun, meaningful way, allowing the children to express themselves through painting, drawing, collage, and sensory-based crafts. The $1,500 grant will be used to purchase high-quality, age-appropriate art supplies, including washable paints, brushes, construction paper, markers, child-safe scissors, glue, aprons, and table covers. We will also provide snacks, music, and story time to help create a festive atmosphere. Each child will go home with their own art kit and completed project to share with their families—encouraging creativity and pride beyond the daycare.
Many of the children in our care don’t often get access to rich art experiences due to financial constraints at home. This event will give them space to explore their creativity, develop fine motor skills, and enjoy the emotional benefits of making something with their own hands. Parents will also be invited to participate, strengthening the sense of community and connection we foster every day.
Bio:
My name is Onisha Smith, and I am the owner and director of a family daycare that has been serving low-income families for the past nine years. My passion for early childhood education and community support led me to open my daycare, where we focused on providing safe, affordable, and high-quality care for families who often face financial and social challenges. Our daycare is more than just a place for children to stay during the day—it’s a nurturing environment where learning, growth, and development are prioritized. I work hard to ensure that every child feels valued, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential. We focus on school readiness, social-emotional skills, and a structured yet loving atmosphere.
