Project: The Southern Magnolia Grandiflora Bloom Watch
The Southern Magnolia Grandiflora Bloom Watch is a four-part public activation centered on the annual blooming of the Hattie Carthan tree at the Magnolia Tree Earth Center, home of the only living historical landmark in New York state, located in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Rooted in local legacy and ecological care, this project highlights the life cycle of our iconic tree by celebrating when it blooms in June. With the tree’s bright aromatic white flowers as a center point, our Bloom Watch brings moments of joyful gathering, intergenerational learning, and artistic expression. Bloom Watch invites neighbors to collectively study the tree and foster a deeper appreciation for the Earth Center founded by Bed-Stuy hero Hattie Carthan more than 50 years ago. We are invoking flowers as a metaphor for renewal and communal life. Across four days in June 2025, we will offer free public workshops focused on environmental stewardship, including street tree care, window box planting, and hands-on demos. We will also invite local artists to draw and interpret the magnolia bloom, with a potential sidewalk performance or stoop play to celebrate its peak. This first annual activation positions MTEC as a summer destination for Black-led eco-arts engagement and neighborhood legacy. Bloom Watch is designed to be playful, poetic, and practical — a low-cost, high-impact model of creative civic action that honors Bed-Stuy’s past while blooming into its future.
