Project: The Perennial Series
Our inaugural program, The Perennial Series, is inspired by the resilient, regenerative nature of Our Temenos’ perennial gardens, hardy plants that return season after season, adapting and thriving through change. Likewise, this series is designed to take root within our community, offering enduring value through workshops, teach-ins, and events that cross-pollinate environmental awareness with creative and cultural practice. Topics will include upcycling and reuse, circular economy frameworks, sustainable design, urban gardening, sound and performance practices, somatic attunement, and more. A central component of the series is Living Libraries, a recurring, intergenerational skill-sharing gathering held every two months. These events weave together tactile, practical instruction with more ephemeral offerings, such as readings, performances, sonic explorations, and collective dialogue. Living Libraries will honor somatic, sound, oral, and oracle traditions, creating a space where artists, practitioners, and community members come together to both share and absorb knowledge in ways that challenge traditional hierarchies and value systems. From seed stratification to synthesizers, we’re interested in how materials, memories, and practices can circulate in sustainable, joyful, and unexpected ways that embrace both the petals and thorns of everyday life. By nurturing spaces where knowledge is freely exchanged and diverse forms of collectivity are not only practiced but reimagined, Artemis seeks to foster a more inclusive, resilient, and creatively empowered Bed-Stuy. While we have a growing list of proposed workshops, we’re excited by the opportunity to collaborate with The Laundromat Project’s artist alumni and curatorial team in shaping the final roster of artists and facilitators.
Bio:
Since the inception of Our Temenos, a women and worker-owned landscaping firm offering ecologically centered design, installation, and maintenance services and that has been based in Bed-Stuy since 2017, we’ve dreamed of creating arts, educational, and ecological programming to foster collaboration, experiment with new ideas, and prioritize alternative systems of value. Now that Our Temenos has a new studio with more space to play and share with the wider community, this dream has become a reality through the launch of Artemis, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, in Spring 2025. Operating out of the Our Temenos studio after hours, Artemis offers sliding-scale and free experimental art, educational and skill-sharing workshops and events, as well as personal development initiatives for youth starting out in the green economy. Artemis is committed to building ecological literacy and fostering a more resilient community in the face of climate challenges.
