LP: What is your neighborhood? What’s your favorite thing about it?
Suhaly: Bed-Stuy! I enjoy encountering loved ones in the neighborhood + having unexpected moments of connection w/ my people.
LP: Can you tell us about a project/event/moment that was a particular highlight of your personal/professional work?
Suhaly: Kara Walker’s “A Subtlety” at the former Domino Sugar Factory by Creative Time is pressed into my heart forever. This project catapulted me into the arts, helped me fall in love with the power of art in public spaces, and inspired me to pursue a career grounded in helping artists’ wildest dreams come true!
LP: What song gets you moving and going when work gets hard?
Suhaly: Nothing a little “Alien Superstar” can’t fix! #Beyhive
LP: What’s your favorite home-cooked dish?
Suhaly: Rice & Black Beans Girlie, forever!
Suhaly Bautista (she/they/we/us) joined the American LGBTQ+ Museum in February 2023. Prior to joining ALM, Suhaly acted as the Senior Managing Educator of Audience Development and Engagement in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s education department. Additionally, Suhaly has held roles at the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI), Creative Time, and Brooklyn Museum and has worked in various capacities with organizations including The Laundromat Project, ArtBuilt, and ArtChangeUS. She has curated exhibitions and public programs in collaboration with Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, Art Connects New York (ACNY), FOKUS, and NYC Salt and is one of 50 field leaders profiled in Jasmin Hernandez’ 2021 book, “We Are Here: Visionaries of Color Transforming the Art World.”
