First Fridays: October | A Legacy of Seeds

Facilitated by Wéma Ragophala

Join us for our second Fall Liberation Series event of 2024! Engage in a panel discussion on the art of resilience! In spaces of uncertainty and turmoil, learn and discuss how acts of ritual and quiltmaking guided, strengthened, and sustained our ancestors.

Artist facilitator Wéma Ragophala will lead a panel discussion with be Dr. Myrah Brown Green a professional quilt maker and textile arts teacher of 30+ years, and Verda H.Olayinka, a former city social research scientist, evaluator, community scholar, and author of Resist Turbulent Times: Ways to Save-Our-Selves (2024) about quilting and spirituals as creative resistance practices for Black communities.

To support the discussion, DJ Drew Hurt will set the vibe! Hailing from Detroit DJ Drew Hurt’s soul, funk, house, and hip-hop mixes promise to light up the storefront! We’ll also have a special mystery music performance with live singers!

Held on the First Friday of each month, The Liberation Series will be hosted in partnership with Wéma Ragophala, an LP artist, who will facilitate social conversations between artists and Pan-African cultural experts as they relate to contemporary social issues experienced by our immediate community. Attendees will be encouraged to contribute to ongoing dialogues about community needs to highlight diverse viewpoints and motivate participants to take direct action through grassroots advocacy.

Free food and refreshments will be provided by Fusion Caterers, a flavor lab packed with traditional Jamaican and fusion cuisine.
