This event is part of Cultivate Project Harmony: Bloom Where You Are Planted, an interactive art and garden salon pop in series at the Joseph Daniels Memorial Garden to cultivate is to nurture and to facilitate growth. With the 100 year anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance as our muse and the Joseph Daniels Memorial Garden as our sanctuary, come feast and create art with your community and the multidisciplinary artist/facilitators from The Laundromat Project’s 2018 Create Change fellowship.
In the tradition of the famous Harlem gatherings of cross-generational and multiethnic assemblies of A’Lelia Walker and Wallace Thurman, the garden is a catalyst to cultivate land, community, and artistic expression to spark new yet impactful resurging movements in Harlem with celebration of its longtime residents and noted leaders. Paying homage to the entrepreneurs of uptown, we are hustling to raise money to nourish a neighbors dream, fund beautification, programming and operational costs for the garden, and inspire solutions to issues pertinent to the community.
All of our events are free and open to the public, however in an effort to raise funds for the garden we are asking for a suggested donation of $5 for Harlem newcomers (You can define for yourself). This “Accountability Tax” first acknowledges that we are all occupants on stolen indigenous Lenapehoking land of the Lenape people and secondly addresses the reality of displacement— both cultural and physical—taking place in Harlem. This small tax is a gesture toward economic restitution and community accountability.
You can also participate in our Seed A Dream 50/50% raffle. Find artist/facilitators around 116 between 7th and 8th avenues getting to know you, create art with you and selling tickets.
