Here to Stay

ABOUT THE PROJECT

As 2019 Artists-in-Residence, collective Chinatown Art Brigade launched Here to Stay: Housing for the People Mapping Project. A collaborative, critical mapping project centering on place-keeping efforts in Chinatown and the Lower East Side, Here to Stay aimed to protect and preserve these historic neighborhoods. The project featured short video and audio testimonials from Chinatown and Lower East Side residents who are directly impacted by displacement. CAB members trained tenants in the new media technologies of augmented reality and 360-degree video. These media were used to unlock audio and visual place-keeping stories for future walking tours and virtual tours via web-based interactive mapping. As an extension of Here to Stay, CAB co-facilitated the C2C (Coast to Coast) Convening in March 2020; a gathering of organizers and activists from Chinatowns across the US and Canada doing similar place-keeping work in their cities.
