Project: Plein air painting workshops
I propose a series of plein air painting workshops for the Spanish-speaking immigrant community in Bed-Stuy during July 2025. The classes aim to foster belonging, build community connections, and provide creative expression for those affected by recent immigration policies. The workshops will be held on the second, third, and fourth Saturdays of July at Herbert Von King Park for two hours each. The format includes introductions (10 minutes), demonstration (20 minutes), painting time (75 minutes) and closing reflection (15 minutes). For outreach, I’ll distribute bilingual posters, use social media, and partner with local immigrant community centers. Participants can register in advance, though walk-ins are welcome. The ideal class size is 10-15 people. Weather contingency plans include indoor spaces or tents through partnerships with local organizations. The classes will be conducted in Spanish, with openness to using both Spanish and English for broader accessibility. All art supplies will be provided at no cost. I welcome suggestions from The Laundromat Project to enhance accessibility for diverse community members. Beyond teaching painting techniques, this project will encourage prolonged observation and hopefully by having people depict their surroundings, it will make them feel a sense of ownership and belonging.
