Solaris J. Capehart
Solaris J. Capehart is a Liberian poet and abolitionist educator based in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Black, queer, and concerned with freedom ~ they use storytelling as a catalyst for conversation, education, and community organizing. Before teaching 7th grade reading in Crown Heights for four years, Solaris traveled the country sharing stories and leading workshops at various high schools, universities, and organizations ~ nurturing the imagination of young people on topics of race, gender, and our collective liberation. They then began creating educational shorts about the principles and goals of the abolitionist movement on TikTok as “mistercapehart” before working alongside their neighbors in Bed-Stuy to found The Garden Abolitionist Bookstore & Community Well. They hold an MFA in Poetry from Randolph College.
