Project: Legacy & Liberation: A Bed-Stuy Cultural Series
Program Overview: “Legacy & Liberation: A Bed-Stuy Cultural Series” We believe that collective liberation begins in intimate, community-rooted spaces—where people gather to share stories, celebrate culture, and build futures together. Rooted in the rich history of Bedford-Stuyvesant, this program seeks to honor the legacies of long-standing Bed-Stuy artists, thinkers, and revolutionaries by bringing their work and influence on the forefront through vibrant cultural activation. Hosted in one of Bed-Stuy’s most historic brownstones, this project—developed in partnership with Brooklyn Emporium—transforms a landmark home into a living cultural space. The brownstone becomes a stage, a classroom, a marketplace, and a sanctuary, were residents and visitors alike can engage with Bed-Stuy’s past, present, and future. The program centers on a rotating series of community engagement events featuring Afro-futuristic music and performance, spotlighting artists like Thomas Piper, a Brooklyn-based folk, house, and electronic composer whose work embodies both innovation and tradition. These events include live music, spoken word, and visual installations that speak to the dreams and struggles of generations past and present. Discussions will explore critical themes such as liberation through homeownership and economic empowerment, the preservation of Black cultural spaces, and intergenerational wellness. Local vendors and businesses will be invited to participate, reinforcing the program’s commitment to economic sustainability and community pride. Together, we aim to reclaim space, amplify legacy, and envision futures rooted in the resilience and brilliance of Bed-Stuy. This is more than a series—it’s a movement grounded in place, people, and possibility.
