Meet Nehemoyia Young, 2014 Fellow

Meet our 2014 Fellows!

Please tell us of an artist, curator, activist, or project that has influenced you or inspired you?

Bell Hooks—Writer / Activist

Please tell us about a place in your neighborhood that is personally meaningful to you, and why?

In Prospect Park on Sundays, there is a weekly drum circle that happens where members of the community unite to drum, dance, and fellowship. In Flatbush where I live, there are various African Diasporic groups—Haitian, Ghanian, Nigerian, Trinidadian, etc. This is a space where shared elements of these cultures can be celebrated, ritualized, and practiced. I feel at home here and like I am recovering & reclaiming pieces of myself that have been culturally neglected in the past.

What is your favorite book, film or song about NYC?

If you are counting Brooklyn, Spike Lee, “Do The Right Thing”. But if NOT, then I will say “Harlem Nights” :)
