Greening The City 2017

Greening The City 2017

Greening the City is part of the 14th Annual Hunts Point Fish Parade & Summer Festival, a day promoting arts and creativity as a means for bringing about environmental awareness, justice, and wellness. Click here to see the photos from Greening the City 2016!

This annual event started in 2004 when the Fulton Fish Market was making plans to move to Hunts Point, bringing with it lots of truck traffic and pollution in an area of NYC that has had to fight for environmental justice for decades. Each summer since 2004, the Fish Parade marches in a mile-long procession and arrive at Barretto Park for the Greening the City Festival.

Free and open to general public, Greening the City addresses environmentalism in a fun, intergenerational, and accessible approach, providing New Yorkers of all ages with the opportunity to learn everyday ways to make eco-friendly choices that support a thriving South Bronx.

Coqiuto & Climate Cart, with artist Misra Walker

Share a memory or thought with former Create Change Artist-in-Residence Misra Walker about climate change in exchange for a free frozen dessert!

Misra uses a coquito helado cart, an icon in the Latino Bronx community, to document the impact of climate change on communities of color like Hunts Point/Longwood by combining statistics with memories from community members of how climate change has impacted them whether in the Bronx or back home in the Caribbean. The fully functioning cart uses a pollution monitor to track the quality of air and temperature in the neighborhood and maps out the changes that occur.
