Imagining a Nonprofit Wakanda: Opportunities For Us to Support Black Leadership in the Sector

Panel organized and moderated by LP Board member George Shuttles with Executive Director Kemi Ilesanmi as panelist at Amalgamated Bank HQ, Martin Luther King Jr. Room

Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) was created in August 2011 by Dr. Jackie Copeland-Carson and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network (PAWPNet) as an annual, global celebration of African-descent giving. Learn more about BPM HERE . This year’s theme is: Let’s Make History.

Given how much discourse there has been in recent years about people of color in nonprofit leadership (from the latest Chronicle of Philanthropy profile of 25 leaders to the Building Movement Project’s Race to Lead studies highlighting the racial leadership gap, to the D5 Coalition’s work to advance philanthropy’s diversity, equity, and inclusion), it is time to renew conversations about how we begin to support one another and build an ecosystem where black nonprofit leadership, in all its many facets and dimensions, can thrive.

George Suttles, Director of Research, Commonfund Institute, will moderate a dynamic panel of leaders representing an array of organizations and sub-sectors, from nonprofit management to philanthropy, to offer their unique perspectives and discuss the challenges facing Black nonprofit leaders and the opportunities to support each other in our work to advance Black communities. Join us and our colleagues as we engage these questions and others, in search of actionable steps.

Panelists include:

Kemi Ilesanmi, Executive Director, Laundromat Project

Melissa Madzel, Managing Director, Koya Leadership Partners

David McGoy, Development Director, Bottom Line

Tia Hodges, Senior Program Officer, Citi Foundation

Lakimja Mattocks, Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships and Learning, Support Center

Roman Jackson, Program Officer, J.P. Morgan Private Bank

We look forward to having you join us for the conversation and networking! Light refreshments will be served, courtesy of Amalgamated Bank.
