Park Avenue Armory Symposium: Culture in a Changing America

Join us February 15 for “Culture in a Changing America.” This special symposium launches 100 Years | 100 Women, an initiative of Park Avenue Armory, lead partner National Black Theatre, The Laundromat Project, and eight other New York City cultural institutions, that invites us all to explore the complex legacy of the 19th Amendment. Session 1, 3:00pm

LP Executive Director Kemi Ilesanmi will speak on a panel exploring public art and citizenship with Tomie Arai (LP Alum), Jessica Bell Brown, Zoe Buckman, and Catherine D’Ignazio.

Session 2, 4:00pm
100Y | 100W partner institutions—which, in addition to The LP, include The Apollo Theater, The Juilliard School, La MaMa Experimental Theatre Company, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of the Moving Image, National Sawdust, New York University, and Urban Bush Women—will announce the names of the 100 women artists who are being commissioned to respond to this significant anniversary. The commissioned work will be shared in a large showcase celebration held at the Armory on May 16, 2020.

Sister Outsider: A Remembering and Declaration of These Her Self Evident Truths 
An Exploration of Black women’s relationship to suffrage and citizenship in the US, including our responses to denials of our humanity through sound and song. Acoustic sonic meditations inspired by black women freedom fighters and knowledge producers. Featuring sonic conceptual performing artist/composer, activist, and Create Change alum Abby Dobson.
