2009 Drop-in Workshop Series @ The Laundry Room
From May to October of 2009, The Laundromat Project hosted a pilot drop-in art workshop series at The Laundry Room located on 116th Street between Adam Clayton Powell and Malcolm X Avenues. Teaching Artists Ifetayo Abdus Salam and Alexandra Tyson led 20 workshops that focused on the participants' surroundings and relationships with their neighborhoods. Below are brief descriptions of several workshops that were offered. Visit our Flickr page for images.

Lesson: Drawing/Breath
Teaching Artist: Ifetayo Abdus Salam
Participants used their breath and a straw to move ink across paper to reflect the outdoor sounds they heard as they sat at the table. They enhanced their abstract drawings with oil pastels

Lesson: Making Community Flags
Teaching Artist: Alexandra Tyson
Using paint, textiles, and buttons, participants made flags that represented their own neighborhood.

Lesson: Collage-N-Motion
Teaching Artist: Alexandra Tyson
Participants created and animated a collage that illustrated a community ritual they often see or experience in their neighborhood.

Lesson: Instructional Drawing: A Window into Your Experience
Teaching Artist: Ifetayo Abdus Salam
Participants created a four-panel drawing that illustrated their personal experiences within their neighborhoods by following four instructions created by the Teaching Artist.
